PhenoCam Network — Ecosystem Phenology Camera Network
Continental-scale network of fixed automated digital cameras at research field stations, capturing half-hourly imagery (some sites every 15 minutes) since 2008. Founded by Andrew D. Richardson; hosted at Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff) — School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems / Center for Ecosystem Science and Society. Migrated from University of New Hampshire (phenocam.sr.unh.edu, legacy) to NAU (phenocam.nau.edu) ~2017. ~700 sites total (738 in v3.0 ORNL DAAC release; ~400 currently live uploading), >60M images archived, primarily North America and Europe with sparse sites in Hawaii, Panama, and elsewhere. Derives GCC/RCC/BCC vegetation indices per region-of-interest (ROI) plus per-camera NDVI proxy on dual-cam stations; emits phenophase transition dates (greenness rising / falling) with confidence intervals. Frozen scientific releases v2.0 (DOI 10.3334/ORNLDAAC/1674, Seyednasrollah et al. 2019 Sci Data) and v3.0 (DOI 10.3334/ORNLDAAC/2389, Young et al.) archived at ORNL DAAC; v2.0 is NASA Earthdata Cloud- enabled. **The canonical instrumented scientific sibling of [[chronolog]]** (community fixed-angle) and [[usgs-repeat-photography]] (historical archival) — the three together constitute the proposed "repeat- photography + ground-witness" family for GONAR. Operational consumer: NASA HP-LSP harmonized Landsat-Sentinel phenology reference (Zhang et al. 2023) explicitly fuses PhenoCam at 78 North American regions to validate MODIS/VIIRS LSP. Funding posture under DOGE/NSF cuts is precarious: NSF Macrosystems Biology / NEON-Enabled Science (MSB-NES) program graduated after FY2024 with no PhenoCam-specific replacement confirmed; DOGE NSF freeze April 2025 cancelled ~402 grants; Congress later restored FY2026 at $8.75B (-3.4% vs FY2024). Treat continuity as at-risk.
