NEON — National Ecological Observatory Network
NSF-funded continental-scale US ecological observatory operated by Battelle. 81 field sites across 20 ecoclimatic domains (continental US + Alaska + Hawaii + Puerto Rico), 30-year planned operations. Multi-modal: tower instrument systems (flux, micromet, soils), observational sampling (terrestrial + aquatic, ~700k specimens in Biorepository), and an Airborne Observation Platform (AOP) that flies discrete + full-waveform LiDAR, hyperspectral imaging spectrometer, and high-resolution RGB camera on Twin Otter aircraft over each site annually during peak greenness. ~180 free, open data products. The US functional cousin of ICOS + eLTER + (in part) Copernicus AOP — and notably cloud-native via AWS Open Data mirror.
