LUCAS — Land Use/Cover Area frame Statistical Survey

The EU's harmonised in-situ land-use / land-cover survey. Field surveyors visit a stratified sample of ~270,000–330,000 points across EU member states (plus candidate countries from 2022) on a three-year cycle, recording land cover, land use, environmental parameters, and four cardinal-direction landscape photos. Coordinated by Eurostat (statistical office) with methodological and analytical support from the Joint Research Centre (JRC). The LUCAS Soil Module — run by JRC and archived on ESDAC — collects topsoil samples at a subset of points (~20,000 in 2009/2012, ~22,000 in 2015 expanded to all EU-28, ~19,000 in 2018, expanded again in 2022). The Soil Module is the de-facto European reference dataset for soil organic carbon, pH, texture, nutrients, and (from 2018) soil biodiversity via DNA metabarcoding. Cited in the G-reqs paper via Tóth et al. 2013 as the benchmark for European soil reference data.
