eLTER — European Long-Term Ecosystem, Critical Zone and Socio-Ecological Research Infrastructure
Pan-European distributed research infrastructure for long-term, whole-system ecosystem science. ~250 LTER sites + ~35 LTSER ("platforms") supersites across ~26 countries, spanning forest, grassland, wetland, urban, freshwater, and marine systems. Some constituent sites date to the 1950s; the network was formalized in 2015 (eLTER H2020 prep), placed on the ESFRI Roadmap in 2018, and is progressing toward ERIC status via the eLTER PPP / eLTER PLUS / eLTER EnRich Horizon Europe projects. Coordinated from the University of Innsbruck with strong JRC and Umweltbundesamt (Austrian Environment Agency) involvement. The site metadata authority is DEIMS-SDR (deims.org), which catalogs 1,380+ sites worldwide for both eLTER and ILTER. eLTER is explicitly cited in the Maso et al. G-reqs paper as one of the in-situ networks whose user requirements feed the GEO requirements registry.
